My poetry collection is out now!
I have recently self-published a poetry book entitled Kwandis Shandis. Kwandis is a sobriquet derived from my name uNokwanda and shandis is a isiZulu colloquial term that means "things". This is a collection of Nokwanda's things.
The cover of the book centres the moon, which is my astrological planet, but also because the moon is iNyanga in isiZulu and iNyanya is a herbalist who specialises in healing through traditional medicines. It represents healing, guidance and stability, which are things that I always aim for.
Prelude: "Each poem has a special place in my heart because it’s born from something I’m either deeply curious about or well-versed in. Even though it may not be explicitly expressed, however, my poems are categorised into four big themes. Firstly, we have the raw realities of patriarchy and femicide in South Africa. Then, there’s the emotional labyrinth of anxious attachment in intimate relationships. Next, we dive into the land issues gripping the rural areas of South Africa.
And lastly, there’s a little space for those miscellaneous topics that I reflect on or simply can’t help but be curious about. Overall, the collection may seem to surface sombre and macabre topics, but that is not the intention. I promise I am joyful, full of laughter and lame jokes as my partner says, however, I find myself fully articulate in the expression of pain, anger and sadness. The poems are not written to increase anyone’s sadness, but merely to release my own"
